Mr. Briggs of the State AVID Office made a site visit to FHS on September 23, 2014. As part of his visit to FHS he was able to visit with administration, AVID Elective teachers and students. He was pleased to see that FHS was implementing the AVID model and also received feedback from our students enrolled in AVID elective classes. This is the first year at FHS that AVID has been implemented.
Mr. Briggs was presented with the local FHS AVID T-shirt and other FHS gifts as part of his welcome to FHS.
AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) hosted the Commit to Student Success Week on September 22nd – 26th. In addition to the AVID Elective classes the other campus classes were sent an activities link for each day of the week that our students could participate in. We currently have 2 AVID elective classes that are being taught by A. Warzecha and A. Herrera. There are currently 32 student enrolled between these 2 periods of AVID.
The AVID Elective targets students in the academic middle–--B, C, and even D students–who have the desire to go to college and the willingness to work hard. Typically, they will be the first in their families to attend college, and come from groups traditionally underrepresented in higher education.
Latest AVID Update:
On October 17, 2014 AVID Elective Teacher, A. Warzecha and A. Herrera attended an AVID training in San Antonio that dealt with vertical articulation, building partnerships for student success family involvement and developing school wide professional learning opportunities. Mr. Ximenez also attended this session on November 30, 2014.
The mission of AVID is to close the achievement gap by preparing all students for college readiness and success in a global society.
