FHS Teen CERT Training

Eleven Floresville High School Air Force Junior ROTC cadets became the first teenagers in South Texas to be certified as Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) members. The Teen CERT program educates teens about disaster preparedness for hazards that may impact their area and trains them in basic disaster response skills, such as fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization, and disaster medical operations. Using the training learned in the classroom and during exercises, Teen CERT members can assist others in their school, neighborhood or workplace following an event when professional responders are not immediately available to help. Teen CERT members also are encouraged to support emergency response agencies by taking a more active role in emergency preparedness project in their community.

Before hands-on training and certification, the 11 cadets enrolled in the U.S. Department of Homeland Security CERT program independent study course by successfully completing five on-line modules. They received 16 hours of training on February 16 and February 23, followed by a mass casualty exercise held at the high school.
