Cameron Johns Earns AFJROTC Flight School Scholarship

Cameron Johns, FHS AFJROTC junior, was awarded the Air Force JROTC Flight Academy, Chief of Staff Private Pilot Scholarship.

This summer, Cameron will attend an 8-week aviation training program where once completed, he will earn a Private Pilot’s Certification and up to 12 college credits. The scholarship covers travel, room and board, as well as all tuition and fees.

Cameron says he is most excited about the opportunity to fly before he even graduates from high school.

“Every time I've seen the inside of a cockpit I thought that understanding all of the blinking lights and complex controls would be next to impossible, it's hard to believe that this summer I will learn everything about them,” said Cameron.

Cameron is in an elite group with only 200 students accepted nationwide. He was chosen through a combination of his performance on the Aviation Qualification Test, PT evaluation, completed service hours and AFJROTC participation.

The Flight Academy is intended to inspire and encourage high school youth toward aviation careers. Cameron has already decided that being a pilot is in his future. He wants to attend West Point or the Air Force Academy.

Cameron shared that after working as a lifeguard at the Floresville City pool he found that it felt amazing to protect and watch over people. He plans to, “join the ranks of the heroes in combat rescue when I am out of college.”
